Gracie Abrams’ ‘The Secret of Us’ Review: Pop’s Next It Girl Misses the Mark
Gracie Abrams, a 22-year-old singer-songwriter, has garnered significant attention with a Grammy nomination for best new artist and an opening slot on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. Her music, characterized by a relatable vulnerability, positions her as a potential next big thing in pop.
In her second studio album, The Secret of Us, Abrams offers an intimate look into her inner world. The lead single, “Risk,” portrays her infatuation with a man she barely knows, capturing her evolving emotions from uncertainty to determination. Similarly, “Let It Happen” highlights her ambivalence in a budding relationship.

Despite her lyrical prowess, the album’s instrumentation falls short. Set against gentle backdrops of acoustic guitar and pulsing drums, Abrams’s whispery vocal style becomes monotonous over the 13 tracks. Her voice, though pretty, often lacks conviction, with the notable exception of “I Knew It, I Know You,” where she sings with raw abandon.
While Abrams excels in conveying emotions through her lyrics, The Secret of Us misses the mark musically. Her potential for creating a standout pop album is evident, but this effort does not fully realize it.
