James Beard Awards 2024: Oregon Chefs and Restaurants Shine at James Beard Awards
James Beard Awards 2024: Chef Gregory Gourdet and two restaurants, Kann and Langbaan, made Oregon proud by winning big at the James Beard Awards. Gourdet, owner of Kann in Portland, received his third James Beard Award, earning the title of “Best Chef in the Northwest and Pacific.”
At the 33rd annual James Beard Awards in Chicago, six Oregon restaurants and chefs were finalists. Among the Portland-based nominees were Josh Dorcak from MÄS and Sarah Minnick from Lovely’s Fifty Fifty. The event is considered the “Oscars of the food world,” highlighting the best in culinary arts.

Gourdet, in his acceptance speech, reflected on his journey from addiction and hardship to becoming a celebrated chef in Portland. He expressed gratitude for the Pacific Northwest’s unique foods and his role in promoting Haitian cuisine. His restaurant Kann and his cookbook have also been recognized in previous years.

Langbaan, a Thai-style dining experience in Portland, won the “Outstanding Restaurant” award. Chef Akkapong “Earl” Ninsom, the creator, emphasized showcasing authentic Thai food beyond common perceptions. Other notable finalists included Hayward for “Best New Restaurant” and JinJu Patisserie for “Outstanding Bakery,” both emphasizing local ingredients and unique culinary experiences.
